Pre Christmas celebrations with Mere pupils

Storybox-x350Thought we'd share these lovely photos of pupils from Mere school taken by Wiltshire Council's Family Learning team just before Christmas. We are fortunate in Wiltshire to have a strong Family Learning function delivered by a team of tutors and support staff who work tirelessly in the community to help less confident learners develop their skills and understand the benefits of learning and how to support their children's learning at home.

This first photo sees the girls proudly showing off the Christmas wands, trees and Santas made with the help of staff from the Wiltshire Scrapstore after celebrating the end of the 'Families Reading Every Day' course (FRED). You can find out more about the FRED course here at http://bit.ly/2iY3rG3. Talk to your school or local Children's Centre if you think your family could benefit from this short course and you'd like to take part in the FRED challenge.

Here's a very happy group celebrating the end of the Story Box course at Mere Children's Centre. The children had finished making their story boxes based on their favourite books and were delighted and excited to receive their certificates.

NEW! Employer Focus Groups

Focus-group-x500We’re delighted to be setting up and leading an Employer Focus Group for generic businesses in and around Wiltshire as well as three sector-specific Focus Groups for local employers in:

The aim is to bring together a diverse and like-minded group of employers, rich in experiences, who share a common purpose and desire within their occupational sector to deliver exceptional service, value and outcomes for customers, made possible from having the right people with the right knowledge, skills, values and behaviours in the right roles.

The Focus Groups are partly in response to the major changes on apprenticeships coming into force next April, which will affect all industry sectors. We have a responsibility now to engage with employers in various ways to help them understand the changes and the potential implications and opportunities arising from them. It’s not all about apprenticeships though; these Employer Groups are about co-operation, advice, peer and professional support around members' wider workforce development needs.

Apprenticeships are changing!

Future-of-apprenticeships-x350From April 2017, apprenticeships are changing big time, primarily to give effect to the government's 2020 vision. Employers will be firmly in the driving seat with more choice, more control and more responsibilities. We've known for some time that the 'levy' is coming and there are many more changes, with the detail being published at various points between now and January 2017.

We also know that many employers, especially SMEs, find it difficult to get to grips with all the information that the government has published so far, with media and expert opinion on top and much more to come. As a big supporter of apprenticeships and a key partner in the Wiltshire Apprenticeships Campaign, we're keen to do what we can to help Wiltshire employers make sense of it all and understand what the changes will mean for the future of apprenticeships in their organisations.

We'll keep you informed as more detail becomes available and help you understand what the changes will mean for you.

To start off, here's our own handy guide for employers on the changes to come; it covers much of what we know so far, in bite-sized chunks, sticking to the facts. We'll keep you posted.
